Afro Peruvian Music

Afro Peruvian music is quite different and, contrary to what some people believe, it was not born in the Andes Mountains.  In Peru, slavery was abolished a little over 150 years ago, and the former slaves were assimilated by society at a frantic rate. Three different cultures (the Africans, native Peruvians and Spanish) were able to come together and create something that can remain unique and still represent all of them with pride.  Thus, The African, Andean and Spanish cultures mixed together and gave birth to a new and amazing style of music. It remained relatively unknown until the 50s, when Nicomedes Santa Cruz became the first Afro Peruvian star. He took black dances and music to a whole new level of recognition and is responsible for much of the popularity of Afro Peruvian music.
